âLance?â Mary gave Savannah a blank look.
But Savannah had seen that same look several thousand times before in her years on the police force. And she had seen it ten thousand times when helping her grandmother raise her eight siblings. She and Gran cal ed it the âWho? Me?â look. And it had other variations, like the one Mary was exhibiting: the classic âMe? Know anything?â
âYes, Lance,â she repeated. âWhere is he? Everyone was in the courtyard after the âaccidentâ except him. I just knocked on his bedroom door and he didnât answer. It was locked,â she added, admitting that she had tried the knob.
Mary looked as uneasy as a cornered squirrel. She glanced right and left and swal owed hard.
âYou can tel me,â Savannah said. âIâm not trying to get anyone in trouble, but we have to account for everybodyâs whereabouts at a time like this.â
âOkay,â Mary said, âbut you canât let it get back to Alex.â
âI wonât tel Alex a thing.â I might tell Dirk and all the rest of the Magnolia gang, she thought, but Alexâ¦no problem.
âLance went home.â
âWent home?â Savannahâs heart sank for a moment. Was the contest over after al ? They could continue without a princess or two, but they only had one prince.
âTo his apartment in Hol ywood. Just for the night,â Mary assured her. âHe was worried that his neighbor might not be taking care of his dog, and, to be honest, heâd had about as much of Blackmoor Castle as he could stand and needed a break.â She thought of hearth and home and the comfort of unconditional kitty love. âI can understand that.â
âHe promised me that heâl be back before Alex is even out of bed tomorrow morning.â
âBut wasnât Alex asking about him tonight?â
Mary shrugged and looked sheepish. âHe asked, but I told him Lance was sound asleep, resting up for tomorrow.â
âWhen did he leave?â
âRight after the shoot. He sneaked away when Alex and I were going over tomorrowâs schedule.â Mary reached out and put her hand on Savannahâs arm. âYou wonât say anything that wil get him in trouble, wil you? Alex gets al upset over even the smal est stuff. Heâd have a fit over this if he knew.â
âHe wonât find out from me, I promise,â Savannah told her.
Mary relaxed. âThanks.â Then she added, âYou know, Savannah, youâre my favorite one of the contestants here. Always have been.â Savannah grinned. âNow, if only the âMan of My Dreamsâ agrees with you.â
âOh, Iâm sure he agrees with me,â Mary said with a bit of sadness in her voice. âFor al thatâs worth.â
âThis stupid contest is fixed,â Savannah told Dirk as he examined the pile of rubble in front of the keep. âI donât have a popsicleâs chance in Hades of winning it. Mary practical y told me so herself, and Lance, too. Iâl bet itâs going to be that obnoxious Roxyâthe advantages of sleeping with the producerâor maybe Brandy, whoâs in cahoots with the owner of the place, the guy whoâs paying the bil s.
